Did You Know Mz. Grundy Gives Classes?

The Turnagain Arm Mining District, Southcentral Alaska

This class includes four sessions:

  1. A classroom presentation about mining techniques and locations, the rush and how it started, where gold was found, and how gold is formed.

  2. A classroom presentation about the contribution of the Dena’ina Native Alaskan community to the gold rush.

  3. A field trip to the Hope / Sunrise Historical Society Museum in Hope, where Mz. Grundy presents the role of Hope and Sunrise in the gold rush. The museum features buildings moved to it from both towns, mining equipment, and stories of the early pioneers there.

    The focus is on the South side of the Turnagain Arm. A side trip to the last existing vestige of Sunrise can also be booked.

  4. A field trip to the Indian Valley Mine for stories of how mining for gold during the rush played out on the North side of Turnagain Arm.

    Includes panning for gold.

In person teaching is available for your school group, homeschool group, church group, or other group.
